The word "numinous" comes from the Latin word numen, meaning "divine power" or "spirit". This name conveys the sense that psychological healing can occur when we have encounters with the numinous. Numinous Minds is facilitated or assisted psychotherapy and personal coaching.
I'm Brad, a neuroscientist and therapist devoted to compassionate psychedelic integration. My approach is based in part in my scientific training. I guide clients in safely and effectively integrating transformative experiences, fostering personal growth and healing. As a practitioner, my persona is curious, empathetic, and unconditionally positive. I have received certificates in facilitated psychotherapy, and have experience with many clients but I approach this work as a committed beginner and take it seriously. One theme of my work is "altered states-altered traits", wherein we work toward transforming the insights and momentum from a session into long-lasting changes to mood, your outlook, and perhaps, to your priorities.
One dimension of my work I am particularly sensitive to is ethical boundaries and clear communication. We will have a mutually agreed upon set of principles and rules that set the limits to our relationship, and reflect the legally sensitive nature of this kind of psychotherapy. References of former clients are available.
Facilitated psychotherapy typically consists of two preparatory sessions in which we discuss your personal and medical history, your intentions for this journey, and the ethical principles that underlie this work. During the medicine session, the client typically lays on a couch or bed, wears headphones and an eye mask, and listens to a curated playlist. That may be interpersed with periods of interaction, wherein the insights gained are shared with the facilitator. This approach is based on the model developed by Johns Hopkins University and the MAPS organization.
The session is unstructured; there are no expectations about what will happen, and it usually lasts about 5-6 hours. Periods of going deep with the eyemask are interspersed with sharing. Within a day or so of the session, there is an integration session in which we discuss your insights and ways of turning them into lasting positive changes in your life. I encourage you to watch my talk on How Psychedelics Affect the Mind to get a sense of how these medicines influence our sense of self and can promote healing and self-discovery.
I offer my services mainly within the Washington D.C. metro area but have traveled to serve clients. If you are interested in pursuing this work with me, I invite you to message me on Signal at doublehelix.53.
